NATO Codification System

The NATO Codification System (NCS) - "The Common Language of Logistics” - is the leading worldwide standard for Item Identification.
The NCS describes, classifies and names equipment, components and spare parts in a disciplined and uniform manner. Each item is allocated a unique, 'life-long' 13-digit NATO Stock Number (NSN). The NCS improves the efficiency and effectiveness and reduces the costs of all logistics operations. It serves to integrate all Supply Chain activities from acquisition through to disposal. Originally, the NCS was established in 1958, and now has been adopted by over 60 Nations and Armed Forces.

NATO Codification System (NCS) is the backbone of the NSN Codification process, providing the rules, standards, and mechanisms for classifying, identifying, and managing items of supply within the NATO alliance and beyond. Its primary goal is to ensure that logistics support and procurement activities are efficient, accurate, and interoperable among member countries, contributing to the overall readiness and effectiveness of NATO forces and their Partners.
